The objectives for NASA aeronautical research on commercial subsonic jet transport aircraft are outlined briefly. These objectives embrace reduction of landing speeds to enable use of smaller close-in airports, advancement of technology for higher bypass ratio turbofan engines to reduce noise and fuel consumption, and increase in force-break Mach number to improve cruise-flight efficiency. If the foregoing are realized, advanced transports with significantly better profitability and effectiveness than the current jets can be realized, perhaps by refurbishment of the existing fleets.
