The potential use of ranging sensors for reducing the occurrence of accidents in real life road and freeway traffic environment, is being explored by many companies and laboratories. Most of the sensors under investigation utilize the FMCW1, 6 waveform This paper examines current requirements of FMCW ranging sensors for automotive applications. The primary function of the ranging sensor is to measure range and closing rate to keep vehicles at a safe distance from each other.FMCW ranging sensors operate with precision even at extremely short ranges. This characteristic makes them especially well suited for detection and tracking of moving targets, and for identification of stationary targets in the automotive driving environment. For current component technology the FMCW waveform is easy to implement and use experimentally in automotive test vehicles for longitudinal control
