This paper discusses the design and manufacture of transfer case chain system sprockets which are currently used in numerous applications. Chain and sprocket systems have been used as an alternative to lay shaft design in transmission and transfer case applications for many years. Even though sprockets may resemble gears there are many unique challenges involved in sprocket design such as sprocket diameter, number of teeth, pitch and intended vehicle use. Packaging, efficiency and NVH concerns drive many of these decisions.
