This paper discusses some aspects of the development of opacimeters for the real-time measurement of low-concentration diesel exhaust smoke, such as that which might be emitted from engines equipped with Diesel Particulate Filters (DPFs). Several types of opacimeters, all based on the absorption of light by the smoke, were developed as part of efforts to improve the sensitivity of this type of detection system. The way in which detection sensitivity was affected by the wavelength of the light source and the smoke particulate size distribution was examined and it was shown that both parameters have some effect. However, since the, particulate size distribution is relatively unaffected by the use of DPF systems, the sensitivity of the opacimeters described here is not changed as a result of using this type of filter. The experimental opacimeters developed in this study are capable of measuring smoke with 0.05% opacity (approximately the level which might be expected from engines equipped with DPF systems) with good signal-to-noise ratio.
