CARGUARD, the corrosion inhibited deicing salt was evaluated to determine its effectiveness in combating the corrosion problems associated with the use of stainless steel in decorative trim applications. Investigations were first made in the laboratory and then supplemented by an extensive two-year service test program. Based on the results obtained, CARGUARD was found to be effective in suppressing surface corrosion of such materials as Type 430, a muffler grade of stainless and autobody steel. It also minimized the problem of galvanic corrosion which appears as accelerated rusting of autobody steel in areas immediately adjacent to stainless steel trim components.
