In this paper, a lumped parameter model has been proposed to investigate the friction coupling effect on brake squeal noise generation. Complex eigenvalue analysis on this theoretical model reveals the mechanism for squeal noise occurrences. The positive damping coefficient in the real part of eigenvalue is evaluated and defined as the squeal propensity factor. Using the proposed lumped model, distributed pad parameters are studied. The derived squeal propensity plots are capable of predicting system changes to obtain a stable response, and guiding pad design modifications on a detailed FE model in the conceptual stage.
