A new generation of both fixed and variable axial piston hydraulic pumps and motors of the bent axis design has been developed making use of a tapered piston rotary group. This new development allows the unit envelope size and weight to be decreased, given an equivalent displacement for displacement comparison, without reducing operating pressures or speeds. In most cases, the allowable operating parameters have actually increased, A resulting higher power to weight ratio (power density) is therefore gained. Other benefits have also been realized due to the inherent design characteristics of these units.
