Hydro-Aire, assisted by Battelle Memorial Institute has reduced to practice the use of a flexible laminated cam ring for a high speed, variable displacement vane pump. This development work has been an extension of previous development work done by Battelle for the Air Force Aero Propulsion Laboratory, the U.S. Army Tank Automotive Center, and the U.S. Army Aviation Materiel Laboratories. This paper provides a brief history of the flexible cam ring pump development, a description of a recent pump design, typical performance characteristics, advantages and a list of potential applications. It can be concluded the pump is ready to be applied to a host of high speed, variable displacement applications and has the primary advantages of simplicity, light weight and high speed.
