Information Technology has affected the way we design and develop engines. The changes are due mostly to the availability of processing power. This will be used in a variety of ways in the future; this paper examines the effects which are likely or possible in Diesel engine control systems, especially in the sensors which provide their information. Emerging types of sensors are considered and some developments in the areas of cylinder pressure, combustion, gear meshing, engine torque and exhaust smoke are reviewed. The paper also speculates on the future development paths of control systems, for both short-term and long-term operation.
