This paper discusses general approaches to the design of lightning protection system for non-metallic helicopter rotor blades. Possible effect of stroke currents on conducting parts external and internal to the blade are mentioned, and general recommendations are made for disposition of protective materials. Testing of any such design is considered a necessity. A specific example is described, tracing the development of the protective system for one particular non-metallic rotor blade.
