This paper is a review of tests employed in the evaluation of used engine lubricants together with comments on the potential significance of the various determinations. Also included is a description of a method for the determination of pentane and benzene insolubles in highly dispersant lubricants which shows promise for a more complete recovery of these contaminants from such systems.
