Eye damages caused by fragments of the tempered windshield have increased considerably over the past years and were observed in all German eye clinics and really represent a serious problem. The most serious damages (perforation of both eyes and damages to the surrounding bones and nose) occur when the face hits the lower part of the windshield remaining in the windshield opening. The co-driver is the most exposed.Statistical investigations of the accident circumstances, the kind of impact, the time of the day, the speeds and the cause of the accident are investigated more closely. The possibility of avoiding such eye damages by use of seat belts and laminated glass are discussed.
