In this work, a design methodology was developed and a working piezoceramic based active control system for the problem of noise reduction of machinery was demonstrated. Design methodologies included sensor and actuator spacing and placement to yield collocated transfer functions over a limited frequency range with minimal feed through. Active control designs were applied to a sample structure, in this case a flat panel. The prototype system tested achieved attenuation levels of 3.5 dB broadband and 12 dB narrow band from a nominal sound pressure level of 90 db.
