A historical review of the diesel engine, from Rudolph Diesel’s original idea and machine to today’s modern applications. Consideration is given to the many development problems, and the opinions of many prominent engineers throughout the world on such aspects as the compound engine principle. Future applications and developments of the diesel engine are discussed.
