The TTA-Group is a consortium which promotes cross-industry transfer of know-how and experience in the area of safety-critical communication. In this paper we outline the activities of TTA-Group's Steer-by-Wire Working Group, which focuses on electro-hydraulic and electro-mechanic steering systems without mechanical backup. The major requirements and advantages of Steer-by-Wire systems are pointed out and specific aspects for off-highway vehicles with on-road use are explained.Furthermore the organizational structure of the Steer-by-Wire Working group, as well as a road map towards a reference architecture are laid out and an outlook for the next steps will be given.
