The main requirements for performance quality of automotive and industrial gasoline engine ignition systems are sufficient voltage to fire, and sufficient spark energy to cause combustion. Another major quality factor with regard to the ignition systems ability to fire badly fouled spark plugs appears to be risetime (the time required for the ignition voltage to increase from 10 to 90% of final voltage). The fouled plug firing ability appears better with the faster risetime systems.Considerable work remains to be done to produce practical fast risetime ignition systems. When the various problems are solved, longer running times between spark plug fouling can be expected from faster risetimes.
