A BRIEF history of the subject is given, tracing the growth of accessory drives from their initial being as magneto drives down to the present stage which embraces such items as automatic pilot pumps, de-icer compressors, and propeller governors. This review indicates that the present groups may well be divided into two parts: one, intimately associated with the operation of the engine, the other with that of the plane. The difficulties facing the engine designer, the installation engineer, and the operator are outlined to illustrate the necessity of a new approach to this problem. In view of the present general interest in auxiliary powerplants, a short description of such an engine is included. The paper terminates by mentioning the present tendencies in the field and classifying the various means of accessory drive with the size of plane with which it probably will be employed.
