The need for an increased emphasis on the reliability and maintainability characteristics of shipboard systems is discussed. Next, the current reliability and maintainability specification requirements are surveyed and their impact on the marine industry is reviewed. This is followed by a description and evaluation of the various types of reliability and maintainability analyses which may be applied to shipboard systems. Insofar as marine equipments are concerned, the major sources of data, its availability, and utility are also reviewed. Lastly, the salient aspects of the Aircraft Carrier CVAN68 Reliability and Maintainability Program are described.
