This paper presents a brief description of the special problems encountered in devising and developing silencing treatments for a supersonic transport aircraft, and the extensive research and development effort involved. It outlines the methods adopted and the development programme involved in the Concorde project. In the course of this work, one of the principal lessons learnt was that static noise tests are not a reliable basis for in-flight noise prediction. The main noise flight tests of the prototype and production aircraft which demonstrated the community noise levels are summarised, and the public response to the first months of in-service operations is indicated.
