Design studies conducted on typical helicopter and VTOL transmission systems have led to the conclusion that high-speed mechanical drive systems are at present clearly superior to other forms of power transmission. Application of the results of these studies to two twin-turbine helicopter transmission systems is discussed, and test experience with these systems is presented.THE FIELD of power transmission systems has been studied by Vertol to arrive at optimum configurations for helicopter and VTOL drive system. Recent designs for the 107-II and HC-1B Chinook Helicopters have incorporated the results of these studies in production hardware. Design and test experience with these systems are discussed in this paper.
