The purpose of this AIR is to acquaint the aerospace industry with problems in attaining electromagnetic compatibility on gas turbine engines, particularly as used in aircraft. It is also the purpose of this AIR to present guidelines for the application of EMC controls to the engine, to its components which of necessity must operate in very hostile environments and to its interface with the aircraft. The content of this technical report has been superseded by ARP60493 and ARP5583. This document does not specifically address the major concepts associated with modern turbine engine designs. For example, engine ignitor circuits are a significant source of conducted and radiated impulsive electromagnetic signals, but the document does not address any design or mitigation concepts for the ignitor circuits. Most modern turbine engines use full authority electronic engine controls, but these are not specifically addressed in this document. Finally, electromagnetic compatibility of the engine cannot be separated from electromagnetic compatibility of the aircraft in which the engine is installed. Electromagnetic compatibility cannot be handled for the turbine engine separately from the aircraft electromagnetic compatibility. It also does not address the issues of integrated electromagnetic compatibility for all engine electrical and electronic systems, such as sensors, electronic engine controls, thrust reverser controls, engine control generators, such as PMAs, and the integration of the engine with the aircraft. This document focuses on test methods associated with early versions of MIL-STD-461, and makes no mention of civil electromagnetic compatibility standards, such as RTCA/DO-160 and ARP60493. It makes no mention of other electromagnetic environments, such as lightning and HIRF, that should be considered in the overall engine electromagnetic environment. ARP60493 provides more up-to-date information on integrated aircraft electromagnetic compatibility and ARP5583A provides more up-to-date information on HIRF.
