This document covers the mechanisms from the power cylinder, which contribute to the mechanical friction of an internal combustion engine. It will not discuss in detail the influence of other engine components or engine driven accessories on friction. Improved fuel economy is a very important part in the development of modern combustion engines. This document covers the mechanisms from the power cylinder which contribute to the mechanical friction of an internal combustion engine. It will not discuss in detail the influence of other engine components or engine driven accessories on friction. In this revision, numerous examples that have very little effect on fuel economy were deleted. New significant factors were added that were not in the previous version of the standard. This includes topics like using advance honing techniques.
