Recently, the serviceability of the heads-up display (H.U.D.) as a display device for a car has been recognized due to its shorter reading time in comparison with other display apparatuses.[1]*[2]However, the phenomenon of masking the driver's forward view, and the phenomenon of absorbing the driver's attention adversely affect safety when driving.[3] in order to solve these phenomena, we have developed a heads-up display for a motor vehicle which directly reflects the information display on the curved surface of the windshield. We have also shifted the information display from the front position to the side with respect to the driver. Therefore, the driver can observe the information display by redirecting his view point laterally. We have developed an optical element to obtain a clear display that does not cause strain, and have established a design method. This paper describes the results of our experiments on the information display position of a car H.U.D., and the optical element calibrating the binocular parallax generated when the display position is shifted to the side.
