This paper discusses research on a tire force sensor for use in vehicle dynamics control, and its application in the system. Tire forces are an important factor in determining vehicle dynamics. Direct measurement of tire forces in real time and the use of these measurements in vehicle dynamics control could therefore be expected to result in enhanced vehicle dynamics. It is desirable for a sensor used in vehicle dynamics control to be easily mounted in a vehicle. Therefore we focused on brake torque, one of the forces acting on the tire, and conducted research on a sensor for use in vehicle dynamics control system that is suitable for vehicle mounting and also is able to conduct accurate real-time measurements of brake torque. The application of brake torque in vehicle dynamics control was shown to reduce braking distance and enhance stability and avoidance performance.
