The effect of a new exhaust catalyst system consisting of the traditional three way catalyst converter (TWC) and adsorber-reduction catalyst converter along the emission systems has been investigated in this research under different schemes of catalyst converter arrangement and different ranges of engine speed and engine load. The effect on BSFC (Brake Specific Fuel Consumption) of a lean burn gasoline engine has also been studied at the same time. The upstream placement of TWC ahead of the NOx Adsorber Catalyst has been selected, which is corresponding to the highest NOx converting efficiency. The effect of engine speed on the exhaust emission and BSFC is related to absolute time and the ratio of lean burn time to rich burn time. Engine load is the major factor in affecting exhaust emission characteristics and BSFC of lean burn gasoline engine. To confront with special requirements of NOx absorber-reduction catalyst, an electronic control system is developed and applied across different A/F ratios and lean/rich time intervals.
