The result of comparison of expansion graphite gasket material with asbestos gasket material regarding their respective characteristics shows that the former gasket material is superior to the conventional asbestos material in aspects of stress relaxation rate, restoration property and sealing performance. The use of this graphite gasket material for car engine cylinder head would enable the torque loss of the head bolts to be reduced to 1/2 or below of the conventional asbestos gasket under such a severe condition that engine is rapidly heated and cooled and, furthermore, ensures sufficient sealing performance against cooling water, oil, etc.
