This investigation indicates that a flame ionization (FID) analyzer can provide adequate response speed and accurate hydrocarbon analyses of automotive exhaust if a slight modification of commercial instruments, as well as adherence to specific operating conditions, is made.Under these conditions the FID analyzer follows transients such as the California cycle at least as well as the standard NDIR hydrocarbon analyzer. The nearly uniform response of the FID to all hydrocarbons is much superior to the NDIR instrument. The greater sensitivity of FID analysis at low hydrocarbon concentrations is also well known.
