Piezo-electric pressure transducers may be installed inside the spark-plug to monitor the pressure signal in the combustion chamber. The advantages of the technique are reviewed and the biggest problem, an induced ignition noise pulse, discussed. Sensor and interface design criteria are developed for the provision of an acceptably noise-free pressure waveform for subsequent circuitry.
