The pursuit of better fuel economy, reduced manufacturing and tooling costs, and higher engine output established a need for light weight, lower cost, high performance fabricated engine components. Thin walled fabricated assemblies reduces the overall weight and results in lower fuel consumption. Higher output engines with higher exhaust temperatures require materials with greater heat tolerance than the conventional materials. Fabrications readily permit use of different temperature resistant materials without substantial tooling revisionsFabrications will always be of lighter weight than their cast counterparts, but proper design and tooling are the key items in keeping the cost competitive with existing methods of manufacture.
