A complete 5500 hp size regenerative turboprop aircraft engine was built and tested. The engine incorporated a modern, lightweight, tubular type regenerator. A reduction in specific fuel consumption of 36% compared to current production nonregenerative turboprop engines, was demonstrated at the cruise power test point. The program was significant because it was the first test of a modern, large size, regenerative turboprop engine in which the reduction in specific fuel consumption was demonstrated. The program also provided a background for Allison’s new lightweight T78 regenerative turboprop eigine.
