A brief history of the development of additive type oils for use in internal combustion engines is reviewed. Various test procedures to determine the effects of lubricating oils on diesel engine performance are analyzed.Lubricating oil development from the 1930's to the present is outlined. The author stresses the point that more effort should be concentrated in developing more definite instrumentation and evaluating equipment to gather fundamental knowledge in this field.
