The on-site Diesel Power Generation business is expanding rapidly in Japan. The enhancement of deregulation and liberalization in the electric power supply market is due to the characteristics of high efficiency power transmission and the capabilities of supplying power on an as-needed basis on-site. In the macroscopic view, the new system of this business style is accepted as the one of the means to reduce CO2 generation.Komatsu newly developed the ultra low NOx (100ppm level at 13% O2) diesel, STA12V140 engine, without deteriorating fuel consumption and exhaust smoke. The 50% water emulsified fuel was developed by a new surfactant to maintain sufficient stability and anti-corrosiveness. The engine performance was demonstrated by using this emulsified fuel. It was confirmed that 90% NOx reduction and improvement of exhaust smoke could be achieved simultaneously. Komatsu's original KP-21 pump enabled the optimum fuel timing control. With respect to the HC emission due to the high water content, the combination of the newly developed hybrid aftercooling system, Komatsu's high compression ratio ductile iron piston and fuel injection timing control ensured to reduce from HC emission even with a light load or during the start up period in cold weather.
