Interconnection technology on vehicles has come a long way since mechanical linkages consisting of pulleys and tie rods. The interconnections on modern vehicles provide paths for data transfer as well as power. With the advent of smaller, faster computers and distributed processing the trend is to have the vehicles “drive” themselves. This data exchange role in interconnection has resulted in the development of the “Data Bus.” MIL-STD-1553B governs the most notable data bus system. Now, increasing amounts of data transfer drives the incorporation of fiber optics into vehicle design. This paper will examine existing and emerging data transmission paths with the technology demands of the next generation vehicles.
