This SAE Standard applies to all types of heavy-duty storage batteries for use on off-road machines as described in SAE J1116. Included are definitions of industry terms, test procedures, general requirements, application recommendations, standard sizes, overall dimensions, and electrical values. SAE J930 covers batteries for Off-Road Self-Propelled Work Machines. These machines subject batteries to high vibration and periods of inactivity where self-discharge leaves batteries in partially discharged states for prolonged periods. Operations differ drastically from that of normal highway operations creating special problems for batteries. This document provides tests and procedures to evaluate and compare parameters important for these applications. Existing standards and procedures are identified, where possible, but additions provide for water loss evaluation, self-discharge, tilt tests for electrolyte loss, vibration levels, and a deep discharge recovery test, as well as application guidelines. This material is identified in a single document with standardized sequences for all concerned with these applications.
