Hand cranking of engines on chain saws and similar portable tools is a chore due to factors inherent in the construction and make-up of these high compression, two-cycle engines. Therefore, preliminary investigations were undertaken to develop a practical “self-starter” for chain saws and similar applications. These are described briefly. The recent influx of Japanese motorcycles with electric starting led to a re-evaluation of electric starting systems and their adaptation to portable tools. This paper views design specifications that had to be met in order to come up with a suitable electric starting system. Discussed in detail are the development of the four sub-systems -- the starter-generator, battery pack, de-stroking valve, and regulatory assembly -- that had to be welded into a workable unit. The primary advantages of electric starting are the elimination of manual effort, increased productivity, and most important, safety of the individual operator.Hand cranking of engines on chain saws and similar portable tools is a chore due to factors inherent in the construction and make-up of these high compression, two-cycle engines.
