The scope of this SAE Recommended Practice is to describe the maximum recommended voltage drop for starting mortor circuits for 6 V through 32 V starters. As agreed by a vote of the SAE T&B Electrical Systems Committee to cancel the SAE J541, the canceled document will serve to preserve the historical 6 VDC and 12 VDC vehicle performance information related to starting and charging systems through the availability of this canceled document. It also sustains the Light Duty information that the T&B Electrical Systems Committee would prefer not to amend in the development of a new starting and charging system recommended practice that is focused on Heavy Duty vehicles. A revision of SAE J541 for Heavy Duty engines would make this Light Duty information more difficult to retrieve. The vote to cancel SAE J541 will also eliminate it from the 5 year maintenance calendar, which was one of the key purposes for assigning the document to the T&B Electrical Systems committee.
