Advances are continually being made in computer-controlled vehicle diagnostics. Technical achievements in the design of solid state current sensors have increased their application in these safety and diagnostic systems. Some examples of successful applications in trucks are: sensing the starter current to evaluate cylinder compression profiles and monitor for cranking system problems, sensing the generator current to evaluate electrical system load and monitor the load for the charging system problems, and using a digital current sensor to assure moisture removal in the brake system during cold weather to prevent freeze-up.
