Evaluation of the performance and reliability of upper-stage rocket propulsion systems requires that the engines he tested at simulated altitude conditions. This paper outlines those elements of rocket engine performance that require tests in altitude-simulation vacuum facilities. Alternate types of altitude testing facilities are briefly discussed, together with their capabilities and problem areas. Typical altitude facilities in the testing complex at the Aerojet-General Corporation, Sacramento Plant are illustrated and described.
