APPROXIMATELY twenty years ago, compounds made from oil-resistant specialty synthetic rubbers, Thiokol and neoprene, began to appear and the practical application of these new materials began. In this paper, the author presents some of the results of research and development that have been and are now going on to produce new types of synthetic rubbers for specialized applications. The many new types of elastomers now being developed and examined in research laboratories have indicated that eventually elastomers may be handling jobs for which they are not now considered.
