A new turbine air starter was developed for electronically controlled diesel truck and bus engines. This starter incorporates an electronic speed monitor that prevents engagement into the ring gear if the starter pinion is rotating. It also shuts off the air supply after the engine starts. Ring gear and pinion damage due to restart attempts with the starter pinion rotating is eliminated. The automatic air shut off allows many start attempts from a fixed volume air supply. The relay valve, solenoid valve and muffler are integrated into the starter body for a simple installation.
