Instrumentation changes have been slow in coming for the heavy duty truck industry. With the emergence of electronic engine controllers and data link communication, new instrumentation is being introduced with the advantage of providing system cost savings. The trends in instrumentation will provided cost effective benefits for the driver, owner operator, or the fleet manager. Clustered gauges, driver information displays, diagnostics, and prognostics will play an important role in instrumentation for the next ten to fifteen years. The instrumentation changes occurring in the heavy duty truck industry are the beginning of a new era for electronics in this market.
