This standard applies to hydraulic excavators as defined in SAE J1057 and J1193. SAE J1097, “Hydraulic Excavator Lift Capacity Calculation and Test Procedure” dated 11-01-1988 was cancelled on 03-02-2001 and replaced with ISO 10567 “Earth-moving machinery—Hydraulic excavators—Lift capacity” dated 1992-08-15. Since SAE J1097 was cancelled and ISO 10567 was introduced very few U.S. manufacturers have adopted ISO 10567 as the method of choice for calculating lift capacity charts. ISO 10567 uses a fixed bucket position, i.e. the bucket cylinder is fully extended, throughout the working range of the lift capacity chart. This limitation on the bucket position results in calculated lift capacities that in some instances are substantially lower than would be obtained if the bucket position could be optimized by stroking the bucket cylinder as required from fully retracted to fully extended. Until this limitation can be addressed in ISO 10567 it is proposed that SAE J1097 be reinstated and once again become the U.S. standard for hydraulic excavator lift capacity.
