The development of the diesel engine combustion requires detailed optimization of all relevant parameters.Of main interest are the reduction of exhaust and noise emissions in connection with fuel consumptions as low as possible. The injection equipment is of essential importance to the optimization of the diesel engine combustion.By means of a development example, the necessary provisions to comply with the 1991 federal emission standards are presented. It is shown how new developments at the injection system offer the possibility to further reduce the exhaust emissions.
