The mechanisms of droplet production and liquid transport in the near nozzle region of GDI fuel sprays is complex. A highly consistent PDA data set has been obtained for the temporal time averaged axial and radial velocity profiles across the near nozzle region for a GDI pressure swirl injector. The PDA analysis, using drop size-class discrimination, has been complemented by an imaging analysis to identify liquid break up and atomisation. These quantitative data are of direct benefit to both physical and numerical modellers of fuel break-up and atomisation in such sprays.
