Air conditioning in automobiles has been a major area of research owing to reduced efficiencies and excessive wear and tear of the engine components under prolonged usage. A possibility for further exploration presents itself in the exhaust potential of the waste gases that could drive a turbine, in turn to run the air conditioning compressor in an automobile.The present effort aims to design, fabricate and test a low pressure, single stage, axial flow impulse turbine capable of generating 1 KW power to develop 3 N-m torque to run a reciprocating type, single piston type A/c compressor on a 4-S, 800 cc, 3 cylinder inline S.I engine. The waste heat potential was tapped at a distance of 1 feet from the exhaust manifold. The results obtained under both cold flow as well as hot flow conditions were found to be encouraging and a reasonable temperature drop was witnessed inside the cabins especially under mean speeds.
