Mechanical CAD systems became available over 10 years ago, however, only about 1% of mechanical engineers use them regularly. Detailed analysis packages, such as finite element analysis, have been available for more than 20 years. Yet, very few mechanical engineers use these tools either. Why are mechanical engineers still using pencil and paper to sketch out ideas, and still punching numbers on calculators to perform analysis? Because the automated design tools available have been inappropriate for preliminary mechanical product development.
