DESIGN OPTIMIZATION (also referred to as “structural optimization”) is a design and analysis tool for creating optimal designs-those that have minimum weight, meet or exceed some specified design criteria (such as minimum frequency or maximum stress), or closely match test data. This paper shows several applications of design optimization as implemented in MSC/NASTRAN, a general-purpose finite element analysis program. These examples show design optimization for weight minimization applied to a flat plate, a car bumper, and a disk drive.
