The use of computer simulation of the driver-vehicle system for safety oriented study has lead to develop more elaborated driver models. This paper analyses the visual activity of a driver to obtain a visual sub-model to be included in a more general model of driver steering behaviour. The experimentation conducted to obtain preliminary data about the distance of the driver to the sight point and the time a driver fixes his attention in the sight point is described. Occasional and experienced drivers where used in the tests and different driving environments and trajectories tested. The results achieved are presented and discussed. Empirical relations are presented and conclusions drawn.
