Performance of a vehicle in the ISO lane change maneuver [1] correlates well with subjective handling evaluations. Therefore, it is one of the FIAT Groups standard maneuvers used to characterize the lateral dynamics behavior of a vehicle. It also provides parameters that heavily influence important objective handling evaluation indexes. An experimental survey showed how different driving styles in the maneuver execution produced large dispersion in the calculated objective parameters. This would sharply reduce confidence in the handling quality indexes. To decrease these parameters dispersion, a study was performed to refine the maneuver execution and the data processing methods. The ISO lane change is a closed loop maneuver, so, for its simulation, a driver model is required. It is developed here according to linear control theory, in order to make its implementation faster using different simulation environments. This also makes it easier to tune and allows for changing vehicles and driving styles. To calculate the objective indexes of handling evaluations, the driver model is integrated both with a 15-dof vehicle model, called Handling-CRF©, which uses parametric curves to simulate suspension characteristics, and with a multi-body vehicle model, called MB-SHARC©.Simulation analysis shows good results in terms of robust and reliable objective handling evaluation, driving style characterization, trajectory following and humanlike frequency response.
