Since the end of World War II, a great transition has taken place in sinking of shafts. Prior to that time virtually all cleaning was done by hand laborers. Now mechanical loaders, clamshell shovels, and grab equipment are used extensively. Some of the newer techniques which utilize crawler-mounted, diesel powered front end loaders and tractor dozers; and air powered, crawler-mounted overhead discharge loaders are discussed in this paper, as are freezing and drilling methods and cost factors.
